Without Arms

An ancient statue in a modern museum.  Time has not been kind to her - at some point in history she has lost her arms.  Yet this will not stop the determined sculpture from the escape she has planned for who know how long.

This charming and wonderfully done animated short is by Alec Vacura, who sompleted this for his student thesis for his MFA while at the Pratt Institute in New York.  It has won a number of awards including the Award of Excellence in Filmmaking at the Canada International Film Festival 2010.  As well as the awards it has made the official selection at a number of film festivals, a testament to the animator who has now gone on to work as a Freelance 3D artist at The Mill.

The software used was Maya 2009, The Setup Machine, ZBrush3, Adobe After Effects CS4, Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD. Whether you take the action literally or read metaphors in to it, Without Arms is a wonderful piece of work.
