The Morning After He Killed Eugene Shapiro, Andre Deschenes Woke Early

Elizabeth Bear’s 2007 novel Undertow was widely enjoyed by many people. It is a novel of intrigue, assassins, extremely ancient alien tools, and what occurs if three borderline personalities fix on saving the universe.  It also has one of those opening lines of which other authors only dream.

The sentence goes: “The morning after he killed Eugene Shapiro, Andre Deschenes woke early.” It’s a great opener, juxtaposing the mundane with the exciting; only in this case the mundane comes second.

That, then, is the entire premise of Delphine Mukam’s beautifully clean and crisp one minute animation. Enjoy!
