The Lady and The Reaper

An old lady is nearing the end of her days and she longs to be with the husband she has lost.  So, when death pays her a visit on night in the form of a rather comical Grim Reaper then she touches his extended hand without fear.  Only, she has not considered that a meddlling doctor on our side of the great divide will decide that she must be resuscitated .

So ensues a terrific fight between the Reaper and the doctor, who fight fiercely over the mortal coil of the ancient dame.  The Reaper eventually gives up, but the old lady has different ideas altogether.  She is not going to let death give up that easily, No Sir-ee Bob!

This wonderful 3D imaging short film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2009.  Although it lost out to Logorama, it did win the Goya Award for its creator Javier Recio Gracia. We just think it's a shame that Oscars can't be shared!

This is EXACTLY what I dislike about computer animation. What a glib treatment of life and death. What a retarded and hyperbolic metaphor: "The doctor is literally FIGHTING death! No one has ever thought of that before!"

Am I the only one reminded of Mammy Yokum from Li'l Abner here?

Too bad there's no afterlife and all the ignorant old lady did was destroy herself. Looks like she won't be seeing anything...ever again.

These short animations aren't entertaining to me, they're a dime a dozen. Just a bunch of people trying to be Pixar and failing.

This isn't supposed to be a commentary on afterlife, on the medical community or anything else serious -- it's entertainment, and it IS entertaining. Just because some blind people can't see it doesn't make this any less of an artistic accomplishment. A glib way to look at life and death? Give me a break, and please give yourself a break, enjoy it for what it is: a few minutes of distraction, entertainment and a laugh or two. The animation was wonderfully done, despite being completely without dialog it said a lot, and that takes some skill. No, these people aren't Pixar. The difference between them and Pixar is not about the quality of their work, however, it's about the resources they have available. In spite of a financial handicap they pulled off something worthy of a large corporation. Kudos all around.

Love it. Great animation, good story, reminds me that we all die one day and that we shouldn't take things too seriously. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for sharing this, it really picked up my spirits more than you could ever know.

As to no after-life, maybe you are right. Even so, is life really worth living when everyone you love is gone. Even knowing there is no after-life, who really wants to live forever?
