The Sphinx Observatory – Science at the Top of the World

It may look like the hideaway of a super villain from a Bond movie but this is the Sphinx Observatory, dedicated to research which must take place out at an altitude of 3000-3500 meters.

It is situated in Jungfraujoch, Switzerland. At an astonishing 3.571 meters above sea level, the Sphinx observatory in the Swiss Alps is the highest-altitude built structure in Europe.

Ruin


Ruin is something quite special.  If you like science fiction and you love (as I do!) animation then this short by OddBall Animation will be something that you will watch more than once.  It is set in the future - from the look of the ruined city a good few centuries. There has obviously been something of an apocalyptic event and this is well and truly post.

Yet life still stirs. A single human is in search of something that may unlock the cause of the devastation.  However, he is not alone... Ruin was not commercially developed by OddBall Animation. It is a project that they developed internally as a way to post their experiments and works-in-progress.  Wow.

Rita Levi-Montalcini Dies at 103

April 22 2013 would have seen the one hundred and fourth birthday of a remarkable woman. Born in 1909 and the oldest living recipient of a Nobel award, she worked past her centenary and put her remarkable longevity down to her own discovery – NGF (Nerve Growth Factor).

So astonishing was her vitality beyond her hundredth year that many asked the question – did this woman have the secret of eternal life? On 30 December 2012 Levi-Montalcini departed this world so we know the answer to that particular question - but what times she had seen...and made. Here is a glimpse in to the life of one of the most astonishingly gifted people of her time, Rita Levi-Montalcini

As a Jewish European woman her own life took many dramatic turns in the times of Hitler and Mussolini - and beyond.

It was a life which, if depicted in a movie, would have many people incredulous that the makers would think they could get away with something quite so unbelievable.

Picture of a Thought


If you thought the network that makes up the internet was complicated, then spare a thought for scientists who study the brain. The 6 billion plus devices that are connected by the internet are dwarfed in comparison to the brain which has ten times the number of neurons.

Slice up a brain in to thousands with a powerful magnetic field and you get fMRI - functional magnetic resonance imaging which allows us to see activity in the brain. You can also measure brain activity with EEG – (Electroencephalography). If you want EEG and fMRI explained a lot better and a lot easier than this, then take a look at this video, produced by Sciencenordic with animation by Per Byhring.

Exoplanets – The Reality


The last twenty years have been interesting ones for those who had been waiting (and waiting) for planets outside of our solar system to be discovered.  All told over seven hundred of them have been revealed to us because of our scientific advances.  Some of them, even, seem to have water and you know what the presence of water may well mean.

Yet the distances between these new planets and our own pale blue dot are vast. The fact that these planets exist is now well established – what is not is how and when we will get to them.  Contributing Art Director at Scientific American magazine Edward Bell (who also recently published the book/app Journey to the Exoplanets) here poses these questions in his latest piece using NASA animation and Ron Miller’s wonderful art. He also elucidates on possible solutions.

The Science -and Silliness - of Kissing

Think about it. If a spaceship full of aliens landed on earth to observe human behavior, how on earth would we explain the act of kissing?  One person touches another person with their lips.  Not, of course, lips to lips alone.  Lips to cheek, lips to neck, lips to – well, just about any other body part can be considered.  Imagine the polite but nevertheless obvious squirming with embarrassment that could be involved on either or both sides of the species divide: especially if they landed on Valentine's Day.

An immediate question might be what is the act for?  The reply could constitute the making of a list that even the most list-seeking list seeker on the internet might find overlong.  Tongue nevertheless in cheek, most people would associate kissing with love and sexual desire and the aliens would probably accept this as part of our self-evidently bizarre mating habits.  When this basic question is elaborated upon, however, to include greeting, respect, sympathy, luck giving, affection and, most puzzlingly, false empathy then who would blame our visitors from outer space from turning tail and leaving this planet in a huff?

The origins of the word are old enough – the Old English language gifted the world the word kiss from their own – ‘cyssan’.  Origins of the word aside, the reason for this most simple yet complex act to exist is still perplexing philematologists (those who study kissing).  They cannot decide whether or not kissing is a learned behavior or if it is instinctive.

Many believe that it is related to grooming and this can be seen between different species on the planet.  Due to the willingness of people to anthropomorphize animals and gleefully spread photos of these occurrences on the internet (guilty as charged) then it is easy to fall in to this potential trap.  It is just as likely that kissing evolved from mothers chewing food for their infants and then passing it from mouth to mouth. So, perhaps the act of kissing does not have a sexual origin at all.

Kissing proper involves the body doing quite a lot of work.  Thirty four of the face’s muscles are used in the act as well as a whole host of the body’s postural muscles.  The most important of these is your sphincter muscle - we kid you not.  Your posture may have just changed when you read the last sentence but allow yourself a second or two to relax your sphincter a little.  The body has over forty sphincter muscles and the orbicularis oris muscle (known to friends as the kissing muscle), consists of lots of fibers around the hole that is your mouth all of which have varying directions.  If you play a brass instrument you orbicularis oris will be particularly well developed.

Let’s add, for good measure, the tongue.  When used in the act, kissing becomes French Kissing, or to use the more basic UK slang available to us, it becomes a damn good snog.  This is where the tongue of one or both participants enters the mouth of the other.  (The aliens are now, of course, way past Jupiter, leaving us to ramble on our own).  While we might not like to be seen to encourage teenagers in this act, many evolutionary biologists believe that there is a real function here.

The object of the exercise – as much as prolonged and intense sucking face needs an excuse other than the obvious – is to check out the potential partner’s immune system through the saliva.  It could also be used to avoid breeding with a relative.  Quite how this is done by the body on an instinctive level remains a mystery but many people have been put off further bodily exploration and penetration by a French kiss with another for reasons upon which they cannot quite put their finger.  No need, it seems when the tongue has done it for you.

Of course the kiss is not always a prelude to getting ‘down on it’.  Kisses are mostly used to express affection between people - quite often to say hello or goodbye.  More often than not the lips will just about touch the cheek of the recipient and sometimes no contact at all will be made.  The emergence of the air kiss, a pretense of the act, accompanied by ‘mwah’ as an exhortation (with or without exclamation marks depending on the relationship) could perhaps be an evolution of the act.  Or, it could simply be an expression of desire – the desire to keep one’s (overdone) makeup intact.

The most likely root of the air kiss is the blown or thrown kiss, which is often done to audiences but can be done between just two people where the physical distance between the two prohibits the act itself.  Sexuality can be removed from the act altogether when the act of kissing is used to display sympathy or reconciliation with others.  It can also be used to offer luck or to celebrate success without any sexual intent whatsoever.  Same sex kissing between men who are heterosexual is quite common in many countries.

The Lifecycle of a Mushroom


This very cool animation is by Thomas Beg, a digital artist currently studying CG Arts and Animation at UCA Rochester.  If you ever wondered how mushrooms reproduce then look no further! Sure, Wikipedia will have all the necessary animation but will it have animation?

This animation forms part of Spectacular Science, a collaborative project between the University for the Creative Arts and the University of Kent which aims to provide a wide audience with access to scientific knowledge and support the education of students in science subjects.

You may have spotted a nod in the direction of 1920's animation such as the Silly Symphonies series and other early Walt Disney shorts and you would be correct in thinking that Mr Beg was inspired by the animation of yesteryear in order to explain the science of today, in this case the lifecycle of a mushroom.

A Workout for Your Brain!

It is true to say that the age of brawn is well and truly over and the age of the brain is well underway.  With that in mind, when you get to a certain age (like myself) sometimes the old grey matter can let you down in a way which is frustrating to say the very least.

Cognitive decline is something which happens to everyone at some point in their life but the fact is you can do something about it.  It does not have to cost the earth either – in fact you can upkeep your mental skills and perhaps even improve on them for nothing.

If you are looking for a way to help improve your memory and perhaps other things such as your eye-hand co-ordination then you should head over to the CogniFit Brain Fitness website.  As well as being scientifically validated it’s free!

You start off with an assessment (that takes hardly any time at all) which will give you an indication about where your cognitive skills are at the moment. You can even get your family and friends to join in and compare the results and then train together to improve your memory, attention and perception.

Science Made Simple


Sometimes science can be horribly complicated and while some bandy words about without question; others scratch their heads and wonder what on earth they are talking about! Science Made Simple is a series of 15 animated interstitials produced for TVNZ 7, a New Zealand TV station, aimed at demystifying and defining commonly used, but little understood, scientific and technological jargon. The series focuses on the defiition of the sort of words viewers may read in the newspaper, but don't always understand.

Here are three of the interstitials – simply but cleverly animated. So, have you ever wondered what quantum physics is?  You can familiarize yourself with terms such as superposition, Schrödinger’s cat, the many worlds theory and then move on to genetics.  There you can find out about genetic modification – how transferring a gene from one organism to another can transfer characteristics. Finally you will get to learn about the superconductor – and how it can conduct electricity without losing electricity.

So, there you are: now you can bore people silly talk with confidence about these aspects of science.

The Drinking Bird – Scientific Toy for the Ages

He looks a little ridiculous, a fuzzy headed bird with a top hat and a big bottom.  Yet in the 55 years since it was patented generations of children (not to mention those who refer to themselves as grownups) have laughed at his bobbling, dipping and nodding.  Yet behind the chortles and chuckles there is some serious science – this drinking bird seems to violate the laws of physics.

Seeming to do something and doing something are, of course, entirely different things and the drinking bird, also known as the dipping, dippy or even bobble bird is not, as some have suggested, a perpetual motion machine.  The bird ducks, takes a sip of water and bobs right back upright, rocking gently.  However, instead of becoming still the rocking becomes progressively wilder until he dips down and takes another drink.  This seems to go on and on – perpetually as it were. So what exactly is going on here?

The intervention of feline saboteurs aside, as with almost any invention of genius, the design of the dipping bird is deceptively simple. Basically the dipping bird is a glass tube and at each end there is a bulb, it’s as uncomplicated as that.  You can tell the top from the bottom easily.  The tube does not extend in to the top bulb but goes almost completely inside the lower bulb.

All the air is removed from the device when it is manufactured so the space inside is crammed with vapor, evaporated from the liquid, usually Methylene chloride.  A beak is placed on to the upper bulb and the head is covered with felt or a similar material.  Over the years variations on a theme have appeared but generally you get the beak, eyes, some tail feathers and that gloriously silly top hat.  The finishing touch to the contraption is the adjustable crosspiece upon which the glass shape pivots.

When the dipping bird seems to contradict the laws of physics it is in fact obeying them but the almost tromp l’oeil effect is what attracts us to it.  Perpetual motion machines do not (yet?) exist because in order to do so they would have to break the second law of thermodynamics.  The law insists that that the entropy of an isolated macroscopic system never decreases – to put it simply, you can’t break even.

One can only wonder if the inventor of the dipping bird, Miles V Sullivan broke even from his invention.  The idea began years before the patent and originally, as you might suspect, it had nothing to do with the bird.  Sullivan was an inventor-scientist at Bell Labs but as a young man he enjoyed evenings out.

It wasn’t the music or the lights but the bubbles in the tube at the sides of a juke box that grabbed his attention (see left, image credit Dawn Perry).  He noticed that the energy wasn’t going anywhere and the inventor determined that something could be done with them.  What he wanted to do was to harness motion- the idea of the bird came along later to make it more entertaining.  Of course, while it is simply for fun it is the science behind it which makes it work.

The contraption is what is known as a heat engine.     This is something that can be built when there are temperature differences that create energy.  To start the bobbing the head of the bird must be unceremoniously dunked in water.  The bottom bulb is room temperature.  The heat there raises the vapor pressure of the liquid inside to a higher degree than it is up in the head.

The liquid inevitably rises, making it top heavy – then it tips.  When it dips in to the water the temperature drops down.  It cools the vapour, the liquid drops back down to the bottom and the bird straightens up.  As long as there is water it can go – seemingly forever.  Time for a dipping bird face off.


Many assume that the liquid is colored water but it is Dichloromethane, an industrial paint stripper, degreaser and solvent. This organic compound is used since it has an accelerated rate of evaporation. Methylene chloride will irritate the skin and lungs but as long as the glass does not break, you are safe.  If it does spill, ventilate the room well and it will soon evaporate.

The bird, selling in its millions, ended up out of Sullivan’s hands.  He was in it simply for the fun – but he was at least named inventor of the year in 1979.  For a toy, however, it displays several physical laws and is a great tool with which to teach children something about chemistry and physics.

Among the laws it exhibits are the combined gas law, the ideal gas law and Maxwell-Bolztmann distribution, which is perhaps the most interesting.  It shows that molecules in a given space can vary in energy level and so can exist in more than one phase at a single temperature – in other words that they can be liquid or gas at the same temperature.

It also demonstrates enthalpy of vaporization, which shows that substances can give off or absorb heat when they undergo Maxwell-Bolztmann distribution.  Additionally, the dipping bird also shows torque, which the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis, not to mention center of mass, the position of the center of mass is fixed in relation to the body.

All in all, for a toy – it’s pretty clever.  It must be right up there in the pantheon of best toys of all time. Admit it, you want one – again.

On a final note, here at Kuriositas we would normally be the first to encourage the don’t dream it, be it mentality.  However, any maxim, those valuable principles that an individual uses to make decisions, can be taken to extremes.  In this case we think we might stick to don’t dream it, buy it instead!

Nikola Tesla: Inventions In Three-Dimensions


As collaborations go, this is a good one. Students from multiple departments of the Art Institute of Philadelphia joined forces with the Tesla Science Foundation to come up with this pretty impressive animation.

The aim of the animation was to showcase historical Tesla inventions which were on display at the 2nd Annual Tesla Conference which was held last July. As well as this, the students have developed ideas about what these inventions may look like in the future.

To cap it all, if anyone asks me what a Tesla Coil is down the pub again, I can tell them. This invention was at the forefront of Tesla’s vision for achieving worldwide wireless distribution of electricity and is something which is quite complicated to explain. Imagine my delight when I discovered that there is an extremely neat animated explanation of the science behind the Tesla Coil in this piece. I’m just going down the pub to explain it – before I forget. Later!
