Nebula

A young girl, alone in the forest, has a mysterious encounter with a strange creature.  This magical and beautifully produced animated short was created by a very talented group of students from Gobelins: Camille Andre, Marion Bulot, Clément Doranlo, Myriam Fourati, Jonghyun Jungboix, Alexis Kerjoss and Sarah Simon.  Again, a superb piece from one of the consistently best animation schools on the planet.

Axolotl

In a world ever so slightly darker than that inhabited by young Mr Potter and his chums, a young girl helps out at a shop. When she sees a pair of siblings enjoying themselves she becomes a little down as her parents can no longer have any more children. However, once asked to look after the shop she comes up with an idea…

Yet once you start using magic, how can it be stopped?  The Sorcerer's Apprentice, however, this is not!

Bizarre but nevertheless oddly enjoyable, Axolotl shows off the talents of Anaïs Poilpré, who recently graduated from EMCA.

Living Statue Levitation

Opinion is divided on the subject of living statues.  If you have traveled to any major world city then you know who I mean: the street entertainers who spend hours dressing up and applying makeup and then spend the rest of the day rooted to the spot (unless to collect money from bemused tourists or frighten small children, both of which are fine by me considering the labors they have gone through to effect their appearance).  They either fascinate, creep out or both in equal parts. Yet this is a new one on me – the living statue apparently suspended in mid-air and looking quite relaxed about it too. So, how does he do it?

These shots of a very  aurelian Prince Charles were taken last week by Flickr Photographer Eugene Kaspersky.  Taking possibly the only opportunity to bask in the British sunshine he will have this side of the next century, the heir to the throne apparently whisked himself away from Buckingham Palace and set himself up on his invisible throne on London’s South Bank.

The Brute's Passion

Back in medieval days you knew where you stood. If you landed in a prison then you knew what to expect from the resident torturer – and the resident torturer knew exactly what to do with you. Unfortunately, when your newest prisoner is a witch then the normal rules may not apply, especially when her original captor forgot to relieve her of her wand!

This is René Hoekstra’s graduate project at at the Utrecht School of the Arts where he was responsible for the animation of this very funny short. It is very much in the ‘old school’ as it were. In fact it reminded me, oddly enough of Tom and Jerry shorts, despite the absence of cat and mouse! Some of the sound effects seem familiar, too!

The music is supplied by Bart Delissen with sound design by Hessel van Hoorn.
