Warsaw Hyperlapse – On a Bike

If Warsaw is on your bucket list or you are visiting Poland in the near future, take a look at this remarkable hyperlapse.  Youtube creator MrTiuro got on his bike and, well, the rest is here for you to see.  He starts in the Old Town district, journeys through it and then ends up in the new commercial hub in Warsaw’s Wola district.

You can’t really get a more honest  view of a city than driving (or in this case, cycling) through it.  Warsaw truly has a dual identity.  First, the old town charms with its cobblestone streets and oozes history.  It is difficult to believe that most of it was painstakingly rebuilt after World War II. Then, we reach the skyscrapers of the modern city – impressive.  However, Warsaw did get its first true skyscraper in 1955 with the completion of the Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a towering building that remains one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks – and you will see that too in the video below.

I don’t want you to divert your eyes from the buildings, but when I ran through the video a second time, there was one thing that really struck me (I live in London, which looks filthy by comparison).  That is, the streets are spotless.  Absolutely spotless.  I couldn’t spot that many bins for public use (although I did see some in the video), so I have to assume one of two things – or maybe it's both of them!  Either the Poles are a fastidiously tidy people who highly disapprove of littering or the City Cleaning Authority (Zarząd Oczyszczania Miasta, ZOM) is one of the best in the world.  Or both.  Regardless, enjoy this whirlwind tour through the streets of the city of Warsaw. Who knows, maybe in a short time, you will be ambling through them yourself.

Fukuoka City (福岡市) Hyperlapse - Visit Japan's Youngest Major City for Five Minutes

Fukuoka City is Japan's youngest major city and has Japan's fastest growing population.  Even so, it has a history that goes back at least 1500 years – it just took its time getting big.  It is also the closest Japanese port city to mainland Asia and its local culture and population reflects that.  This amazing hyperlapse of the city shows it off perfectly – a fascinating five minute snapshot from a place that many outside of Japan haven’t really heard of.  The video also contains a glimpse of two of the intriguing Yamakasa  festival (pictured above) that is held every year in July.

In case you wonder, as I did, why a hyperlapse about a city called Fukuoka has so many signs that seem to indicate that we are in a place called Hakata, there is a good reason for this. Hakata was once a city in its own right, but has been subsumed into Fukuoka as the latter became larger.  The two cities became one in 1878 but it is still thought of, in many ways, as a city within a city.

Watch the amazing hyperlapse video below.

Welcome to London - A Short Hyperlapse Film

Take a trip around London without getting out of your chair.  This wonderful hyperlapse by Mattia Bicchi features a number of the English capital’s well-known architectural features including a stunning shot of Tower Bridge.

Hyperlapse really is a labor of love so many thanks to Mattia for this superb example of a fairly new form.

Asia Hyperlapse

No time to get on a plane and spend time traveling through Asia? Me neither. So, take it all in over the course of three minutes instead courtesy of this hyperlapse video by Swiss designer Sylvain Botter who was lucky enough to travel through nine Asian countries with his girlfriend over a six month period.  The countries featured in the video are China, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Burma.  I think I would need another holiday to get over it all!

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Madeira, You Will after You Watch This

This short hyperlapse and timelapse combo by Kirill Neiezhmakov is short but amazing.  What I would like to know is how he got the fountain to appear as if by magic (you have to get to around the 40 second mark for that!).  This is technically amazing work – the timelapse equivalent of street magic, perhaps?  Whatever, we hope you will love the sights of Madeira presented in this remarkable way!

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Rome, You Will After You Watch This

Rome has an appeal like no other city in the world and when you see it through the eyes of timelapse and hyperlapse professional photographer Kirill Neiezhmakov then it isn’t difficult to see why.  As with all of Neiezhmakov’s work I am left wondering not how he made the city look so splendid (that’s not a hard one!) but how he physically managed to capture Rome in this way.  Certainly, if you have never wanted to visit Rome (and the Vatican City is thrown in here for good measure) you will after you watch this!  The piece is called A Gift from Rome and it certainly does what it says on the packet!

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Portugal, You Will After Watching This

Photographer and filmmaker Kirill Neiezhmakov has excelled himself this time.  Visiting Portugal in May 2014 he took in Lisbon and Sesimbra, creating this amazing combination of time-lapse and hyperlapse, with a little tilt shift thrown in for good measure.  The merge from one place to another is seamless (how does he do that?) as is the transition from terra firma to water.  An outstanding piece of film.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Madrid, You Will after You Watch This

Truth be told I have always felt sorry for Madrid – what with Valencia and Barcelona also in Spain it is almost like being a woman with two younger, more beautiful sisters always around to remind you… My own personal opinion aside, we have featured a number of hyperlapse and timelapse videos by Kirill Neiezhmakov on Kuriositas in the past – and for one very good reason: his work is always superlative. So, older sister Madrid, step out of the shadows in to the light!

How to Make an Apple Swan - A Fruity Hyperlapse

If you have ever wondered how amazing fruit sculptures are made then perhaps this hyperlapse is a good place to start – with an apple swan.  You can see how it is cut, carved and created in less than a minute.

intemporalité

Intemporalité is an experimental film made from a large number of photographs (technically its a Hyperlapse and timelapse combined).  The architecture of Paris is deliberately distorted by Didier Viodé but it retains its timelessness and beauty yet you will never have seen the French capital quite like this.  As another way to discover this amazing city it is quite something (even though I challenge anyone to become jaded with the real thing!).

Maramures Hyperlapse

Never heard of Maramures?  It’s an isolated region of Romania: effectively a valley, it is surrounded by the Carpathian mountains and was difficult to get to for many centuries.  As such it developed its own style of rural architecture which is quite amazing.  Home to some of Romania’s historic wooden churches not to mention the Merry Cemetery, Maramures is an intriguing, beautiful place as this hyperlapse shows.

Very Little Stars

Jaw, meet floor. This is one of the most astonishingly good timelapse films you will see for a long time.  Created by Timelapse Inc, the short was photographed and edited by Ben Wiggins with the accompanying music being The Alley by DeVotchKa. Very Little Stars showcases the newest development in timelapse the adopted name for which at the moment is hyperlapse.

What is a hyperlapse? You may well ask.  Essentially it involves moving the camera while still shooting at a speed normally associated with timelapse.  It’s a new technique and one that has been evolving recently – what Wiggins does here is move it on to the next level by making these movements huge.  Sit back, go full screen and if your machine will take it, switch to HD. Remember to hold your chin in your hand to avoid the jaw/floor moment.

Moving Through Saint Petersburg

Take a whistlestop tour through the streets of St Petersburg. From 1732 to 1918 the city was the Imperial Capital of Russia and its many famous landmarks are testament to its history.  This timelapse was created by Geoff Tompkinson with an original soundtrack by with original music score by Vincent Jacq.

The video shows some of the best examples I have seen of hyperlapse techniques.  involves moving the camera while still shooting at a speed normally associated with time-lapse.  It’s a new technique and one that has been evolving recently - Tompkinson and his ilk are comfortably taking it to the next level with some huge, sweeping shots that make you wonder exactly how they were done.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Rome, You Will After You Watch This

It is difficult to catch the spirit of a city on film especially one as enigmatic as the capital of Italy, Rome.  However, cinematographer Alex Soloviev achieves just that in this short portrait of this most energetic of cities.  If you like to people watch as much as sight-see then you should thoroughly enjoy this as Soloviev not only captures the places but that which brings them alive - the people.

Go Delhi Go: Hyperlapse

Delhi is a city with so much history that one might need a lifetime just to appreciate its many different aspects.  However (a reluctant one, but still) in lieu of time to spend doing just that, soak in Delhi in all its glory by watching this fantastic hyperlapse by Ayush Dinker of Etheral Colours. Over 5000 pictures went in to creating this hyperlapse – and please watch it in HD if your connection will allow!

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Slovakia, You Will After You Watch This

Present-day Slovakia only became an independent state in 1993 but it has over 1500 years of Slavic cultural history behind it not to mention some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe.  Dominika Martincova hails from this small but incredibly vibrant country and created this marvelous time-lapse of her homeland (called Time for Slovakia) on returning to it after almost three years of globe-trotting.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Moscow, You Will After You Watch This

Moscow as the sun goes down is something to behold but like any other city in the world, when the stars come out so do those who want to have a great time. Alex Soloviev captures the Russian capital beautifully in this short film, Moscow Moves.  There is a lot to see in this grand old city, the very old; yet there is also a vibrancy to the youth culture which puts Moscow on a par with any other capital.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Zagreb, You Will After You Watch This

Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, has always stood as a bridge between east and west.

This video by Kirill Neiezhmakov displays this city of a million souls at its best, reflecting the ebb and flow of history.

Many cultures have shaped this city over the course of the centuries and you will see all of this in the video, together with its people.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Arizona, You Will After Watching This

This film by Mike Olbinski is something different and something quite special.  Potential visitors to Arizona might imagine it a dry and barren place – after all that is how we often see it in the media.  Yet there is a monsoon season and Mr Olbinski beautifully captures the majesty of the Arizona landscapes as the rains come down while still giving us the dust storms we might expect too. Some of these shots are staggering.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit Florence, You Will After You Watch This

Florence is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and once you have watched this you will understand why (that is, of course, if you are not already of that opinion).  Kirill Neiezhmakov, whose work we regularly feature on Kuriositas, has pulled off another genius timelapse/hyperlapse which takes in all the sites of Florence, a city simply brimming with churches, museums and palaces.
