The Lifeguard Towers of Miami Beach

Lifeguard towers can be found the world over.  Yet not many places can boast as many unique examples of this form of architecture as those along the eight and a half mile stretch of Miami Beach.  All told there are twenty five towers guarding those who use the beach. At once functional and decorative, they contribute beautifully to the overall aesthetic of this Floridian resort city.

Kalyan's New Heads

Back in April Kuriositas featured the work of Miami based artist NFN Kalyan (pictured above). He has been busy since then and has recently completed three new heads for his series. The three new intriguing pieces are titled Barack, Chuck and Kundun and we are very pleased to give you a glimpse of these wonderful new works of art. Kalyan’s website features much more of his work – each of the pictures here links to his site – or you can visit his management, Leonardo Art for more information.

Made from Glass, wood and steel, the sequence of 22 pieces of glass investigates the transparency of the modern day fame. As we peer at their faces, can we see our own reflection?

Kalyan – Entwined Iconography

Miami based artist NFN Kalyan (above) produces thought provoking work to say the very least.  An Indian-American, his background bleeds through his work and often the collision of cultures, religions and thought combine and merge to create questions which, while we need not answer them directly, linger in the mind and make their own demands.

Kalyan works in a variety of media, metal, glass and wood and the materials often reflect the duality of his art.  Ideas are interwoven and locked in to the materials yet how you interpret or react to his art is very much an individual response.  Without doubt, a response is provoked, ellicited demanded. Kuriositas is very pleased to present a selection of Kalyan’s recent work, with the permission of the artist.  To see more, please visit his website.

Che Guevara’s Watch
Che Guevara, certainly one of the twentieth century’s most icon figures was assassinated but knew with prescience that his death would change him from a man to something more than that.  His last words, famously, were: Shoot, coward, you are only going to kill a man.

Some see Guevara as a political messiah while others as an irritant on the politics of his lifetime.  Che Guevara’s Watch explores the duality of how he is regarded from the perspective of a single moment – that second before his death when he uttered his last words.

Duality
Here we see another famous figure of the twentieth century, J. Robert Oppenheimer, scientific director of the Manhattan Project and often called the father of the atomic bomb. Beautifully made from glass on wood the materials reflect the duality of Oppenheimer’s own horror he felt when he beheld his creation with the need for its creation.

Trinity
Trinity revisits Oppenheimer and has his portrait in a tessellation.  It portrays Christ and the Apostles as Krishna and calls to mind Oppenheimer’s quote from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad-Gita when he saw the detonation of the first nuclear device.  Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.

Divinity
Divinity was created with a Bic ballpoint pen on bristol board. It is a stylised merger of Vishnu and Christ as well as Lakshmi and Mary. Mathematic equations form the border.

Untitled
As its name suggests, this piece leaves it all up to you.  What would you call it?

LeBron
Contemporary iconography is explored further in LeBron.  This piece is made is made from a sequence of 22 pieces of glass. A figure not without controversy, LeBron investigates the transparency of the modern day celebrity. As we peer at his face, can we see our own reflection?

TrustoCorp – Satirical Upstart Art

TrustoCorp. It sounds as if it might be a global organisation bent on domination from a film such as RoboCop or Blade Runner and perhaps they may just as well be. Although the truth is somewhat different very little is known about this mysterious artist (or perhaps collective). One thing is known – TrustoCorp’s work is becoming more and more recognized and popular.

There are some for sure who know who TrustoCorp is (or are) they are keeping their lips tight shut. Nothing is quite as enigmatic as an unknown but hugely talented artist(s) but it does have to be said that their number is growing in to a potentially tediously large number.

That aside, there is some information we can impart about the mysterious TrustoCorp. He, she or they are based in New York City and this is where there humorous street signs and product labels first began to appear. They seem to like travel, but not necessarily out of the comfort zone of the US. TrustoCorp work can be found in San Francisco, Miami and San Diego. Nowhere else.

Quite what they want is also something of a mystery – however it is perfectly likely that they may not want anything more than to brighten up people’s day albeit in a somewhat mischievous manner. They communicate only via email – one to the American ABC News network stated that they were "dedicated to highlighting the hypocrisy and hilarity of human behavior through sarcasm and satire." We thought they might.

Although the satire is there – and it is sharp – it is directed at humanity in general and not at specific individuals, although you might occasionally recognize yourself as a target in their work. For example, they have placed ‘Fat Zone’ notices up outside of fast food restaurants, with the additional information that dieting is un-American (and therefore should be banned).

Yet, the fact that TrustoCorp’s arrow is aimed at the broadest of targets – all of us – it still hits its target with surpreme accuracy.

It seems that whenever the fire department in New York spots one of TrustoCorp’s statements they are contractually obliged to take down the offending piece of art. One can only hope that these brave city employees stash the works at home rather than surrendering them for destruction – these pieces may well be worth a small fortune in the future.

Cheeky, irreverent and – quite frankly – upstart, TrustoCorp also place their rebranded goods in to stores under the noses of their unsuspecting proprietors. If you live in the American cities named above, particularly New York, you should really keep an eye out. You might be shopping for artichokes and end up with art instead.

Giant Pink Snails Invade Miami

It sounds like the name of a long forgotten B-Movie from the 1950s but Miami has indeed been invaded by giant pink snails – 45 of them – and they are there with purpose.   However, unlike many of the alien invaders featured in many science fiction movies, these come in peace.

At eight foot tall that may be just as well but these giant snails are in fact an installation by the Cracking Art Groups (or CAG).  They have been set at the major entry points of the Florida city for a period of six weeks.  They will then take a tour of Florida (and no doubt take in Disneyland on the way).

When it comes to art of this kind, particularly the invasions of giant multi-colored beasts throughout a plethora of European cities over the last two years the answer to why is usually simply because.  Fair enough, but these snails are in Miami to make a certain point.  Little wonder, though, that this latest influx of visitors is European in origin.

The CAP group is committed to creating a sustainable global set of ecosystems and as such they create these sculptures (using only recycled plastics it must be added).  The whole point of the project, which is fully supported by the Mayor of Miami Beach, Matti Bower is to make people stop, wonder, think and hopefully act.

After all, recycling has become such a part of our culture that it is easy to believe that by categorising the trash then that’s our bit done.  However, the fact that we can all do more collectively is something of which CAG wish to remind us.

Oh... and they also come in mini-mollusc size (and before any of you tell me that snails are gastropods, I couldn't resist the pun plus snails are members of the molluscan class known as Gastropoda).

The group, which hails from Italy, have recently had their work on display in Milan (seen rampaging its streets above).  Yet you may still be wondering just why they chose green snails.

Because.
