Shanghai: the last new aerial footage of the city you will ever see

Authorities in Shanghai have introduced a 120m height restriction for drones.  That means that no one will ever again be able to film the city from that height or above.  Why? It is considered controlled airspace by the authorities – the new restriction is to stop any possible interference with any other aircraft such as helicopters but also because it is close to commercial flight paths and they simply don’t want to take that risk.   Although this is understandable, it’s something of a shame (and apparently the police have been cracking down on it massively).  If Shanghai looks spectacular (any time of day, but especially at night) then it looks like something out of a science fiction movie once the sun has set.

In something of a homage, lalin photography (a cooperative of five photographers) shot this remarkable footage recently.  Apart from a few frames which explain the current situation, this is a flight without words through the city in the nighttime.  The work is stitched together from drone footage from the last few years which has never been released before. As such, this is probably the last new aerial footage of Shanghai you will ever see.  So, sit back and take in the sites – Nanpu Bridge, The Bund, Huangpu river skyline, Pu Xi, Shiliupu Pier and a host of other places in the city.  This is wonderful work.

The French Dream - Remarkable Drone Footage of Historic Western France

The French Dream is a quietly cinematic travel film by Patrick Morris, better known as the Drone Biker. Travelling through Europe on his motorbike, Morris combines road travel with aerial filmmaking, capturing landscapes from both ground and sky.

In this film, he explores parts of France including the Loire Valley, the Dordogne, and the Périgord - La France de l’Ouest. These are regions shaped by rivers, stone villages, and long, long histories, and the video takes its time to observe them. Castles emerge from morning mist, fields stretch beneath wide skies, and small towns appear seemingly untouched by the urgency of modern life.

Rather than aiming for spectacle, The French Dream focuses on mood and atmosphere which allows the spectacle (and this part of France is truly spectacular) to effectively reveal itself. The camera lingers, allowing light, movement, and sound to do the work. It’s a reminder that travel doesn’t always need narration or drama; sometimes it’s enough simply to look carefully.

I particularly liked the shots at 2:49 of the video of Beynac-et-Cazenac in the Dordogne Valley, southwestern France (and pictured at the top of the post). The castle is Château de Beynac, a medieval fortress perched on a limestone cliff above the River Dordogne, with the village of Beynac clustered along the riverbank below. It’s one of the best-preserved and most recognisable castles in the region - and a frequent subject for drone footage and travel films.  Having visited in my youth, this brought back a whole host of happy memories.

Morris’s film offers a calm, reflective view of France - one that invites the viewer to slow down and appreciate the quiet details of place and history.  I must say, it has made me want to pack a bag and head for France…

Little Lithuania – A Time-lapse Tilt-shift Journey

Lithuania, if you don’t already know, is a country in the Baltic region of Europe. It is also beautiful.  Filmmaker Jorg Daiber combines drone footage, tilt shift photography and timelapes expertise to show the country off in a very different way.  Some of the older Lithuanian architecture already looks a little “toy town” (not an insult, it’s very visually striking) so the techniques employed here make it look almost unreal in its beauty.  This is part of Daiber’s Little Big World series – if you enjoy these, check out his others on YouTube.

This particular video travels from the amazing Trakai Island Castle (known as the watercastle) to the famous hill of crosses (featuredpreviously on Kuriositas).  You also get the opportunity to check out the gorgeous beaches and sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, then stroll though cities like Klaipėda, Kaunas and the busy capital Vilnius (where we also get a glimpse of modern architecture, too!). All of this in only 4 breathtaking minutes – simply wonderful.

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit China, You Will after You Watch This

China from Above is, as you have probably guessed, drone footage. Using a DJI Phantom 4, traveling videographer Stef Hoffer has captured some truly awesome landscapes as he crossed the country. This video takes us from the northern 'rust belt provinces' to the beautiful mountain landscapes of national parks like Zhangjiajie (often named as an inspiration for the Avatar movie) and Jiuzhaigou.  Sit back and take it all in and then, if it not there already, put China on to your list of places to visit!

Hebridean Dreams

Mo Thomson and Andy (from AerialViewScotland) captured this amazing footage on their way to watch the partial solar eclipse in March.  They drove up to Harris and Lewis, via Skye and the results are simply stunning. As well as a gorgeous horse there is the beauty of the Callanish standing stones bathed by the Northern Lights, breath-taking beaches and much more besides.

It's like the opening sequence of Outlander might have been, without Catriona Balfe running breathlessly around everywhere like a headless chicken. Plus it has proper Scottish Gaelic music too, Do Chalum by Julie Fowlis.

Rhyolite: A Ghost Town from the Air

Rhyolite is an abandoned mining town in Nevada and if you search for it online you will find no end of images.  Yet this is the first time I have seen this fascinating place from above.  Director and fIlmmaker Philp Bloom took his Phantom 3, the new DJI drone, for an hour’s spin over the town (and through it too).  The results are remarkable – the shots of the town are unlike any of those seen before.

Vietnam from Above

As a predominantly armchair traveler I do like to see things from many different perspectives, explore the unusual and not just in terms of destination but the way that I see it.  So I was immediately drawn to this by Thắng Sói, whose drone flies through the country of Vietnam and captures the place essentially and from above.  This is something you should prepare for – go and get a coffee, turn up your speakers a little, sit back and enjoy.

Above the Clouds: The Yuanyang Rice Terraces in China

We have covered some of China’s extraordinary rice terraces before on Kuriositas but this needs to be included!  Henry Jun Wah Lee of Evosia Studios captured this amazing arial footage of the Yuanyang rice terraces with a drone and the results are incredible.  This extraordinary landscape has been cultivated for thousands of years yet I expect they have rarely been recorded in such a way as this.  Sit back and enjoy!

If You Have Never Wanted to Visit New Zealand, You Will After You Watch This

New Zealand is an incredible place to visit and if you have five months, as Man and Drone did, then you will be able to take in a great deal of this fascinating country.  Here you have a combination of drone footage and timelapse which showcase the simply gobsmacking beauty of the place.  If you are planning a visit to New Zealand you  might want to read the accompanying article to this incredible piece of film.

Lofoten

We have featured Lofoten in Norway a number of times on Kuriositas as it is such a special place – not least because it shouldn’t really be there at all.  Yet this stunning part of the world does exist and Kai Venøy has created this amazing short film to take you on a tour of the place from the comfort of your [insert wherever you are right now]. It was filmed with the DJI Phantom 2 drone and a number of other cameras.  The result is stunning.

Above Transylvania

Admit it – if you were asked to do a variation on the Rorschach Test but with words and someone said Transylvania, your reply would be Dracula, correct?  However there is so much more to this historic central part of Romania.  Jonathan J Scott recently took his DJI Phantom 3 there and captured the lush beauty of the rolling landscapes from above.  It really is quite breath-taking and not a vampire in sight. Guess they may not have heard of daylight rings there…

Monument Valley by Drone

The magnificent sandstone buttes of Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah state line – what a perfect site to send a drone up high and capture some amazing footage.  That is exactly what the folks at FreewayDrone did, getting special permission from  the Navajo Film Office to fly for two days.  The results are something quite ridiculously beautiful: the serenity and sheer immensity of the landscape is perfectly caught.
