The Remarkable Teamwork of Weaver Ants

The Bizarre Nest of the Central American Paper Wasp

Take a look at the photograph above.  Is it some strange kind of blooming plant?  Is it a fungal growth attached to a tree?  It is something else entirely.  This is the bizarre nest of the Central American Paper Wasp.  It is notable for one thing – an apparent lack of nest altogether.  Those pale yellow cigar-shaped objects? The Burrowing Owl – The Smallest Species of Owl

You may have already guessed how this owl gets its name but that isn’t the only remarkable thing about it. The burrowing owl is the smallest of the owl species and as you can see from the photograph above even ground squirrels look large beside it, even though it is behind the birds.  The Ark in Space has a feature on this enchanting and unusual raptor.

The Tarantula Hawk - Ruthless ‘Raptor’ of the Insect World

Don't look now, but over at Ark in Space there is a not for the squeamish post about the Tarantula Hawk Wasp.  This rather terrifying insect does what the name says - it preys on tarantulas, which it uses as a feast for the next generation. With some great pictures of the wasp in action, we suggest that you do not read this if you are having your lunch!
