Teddy Bears are for Lovers

Collin is something of a serial Casanova and, just when his girlfriends’ thoughts turn to love he heads off the issue with a gift – a teddy bear.  This has gone on for some time but one evening when Collin is in bed, the teddy bears come back to exact their revenge on him.  Directed by Almog Avidan Antonir, this short film features some of the most murderously cute teddy bears you will see this week.

Manhunt

Imagine if all the animals we, as a species, have killed over the millennia came back to exact their revenge, what shape would it take?  This is the question posed in Manhunt by Northern Lights.  It is a dark, surrealistic revenge fantasy of animals on humans for the mess they have made.  There are some early scenes of animals suffering so don’t watch if you are easily upset.

The Cat House of Riga - A Feline Feud

If you have ever felt slighted by an individual or group then this is a lesson in revenge for you! Riga, the capital of Latvia is home to the Cat House, known as such because of the two sculptures of cats high on its roof.

It is one of the city’s landmarks and is a testament to the desire of one man to have vengeance (if only metaphorically) on his enemies.

Many, many years ago if you lived in Riga and were in business then you just had to be a member of the Great Guild. Until you were invited in to its hallowed halls you simply had not made it. One Latvian businessman was incensed when he was not admitted to the Guild and hatched a peculiar, personal and unique form of revenge.

Birdstrike

Do you ever feel sorry for those birds, busy minding their own business when they get sucked in to the turbines of an airplane?  In Birdstrike the shoe is on the other foot, as it were, as the plane is suddenly smaller than the bird.

Johannes Schiehsl created this terrific animated short as part of his second year at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Germany.  Since graduating, Schiehsl now works as a director at Neuer Österreichischer Trickfilm in Vienna and Berlin.

Ten Thousand Pictures of You

It is said that hell has no fury like a woman scorned – and that can most certainly be said to be true of Sarah, the lead character in this short, stop motion film.  Her bounder of a man dumps her and he goes to extreme lengths to get her revenge on him.

Written, directed and edited by Robin King and starring Denise Hoey and David Crow, this film took about a year in all to complete.  It was created using a variety of applications, notably Photoshop, Premier 6.5 and a number of bespoke programs which were coded by King himself.

It was shot using a Canon Eos 350D Digital SLR and although it is called Ten Thousand Pictures of You – there are over 26,000 in the final film.

Vow

A mother stands between a daughter and a hungry lion and makes the ultimate sacrifice. The daughter vows that when she grows up she will avenge her mother. Years later the opportunity presents itself but all is not quite as it seems.

This is a remarkable animated short, created by Bridget Underwood as her graduating senior film at the Savannah College of Art and Design. It is simply beautiful and tells a moving story in an understated manner. What I also like about Vow a lot is that Bridget chose a female protagonist for her story and didn’t give her ponytails and a twee song to sing. Bravo Briget!
