If you have ever wondered what exactly the United Kingdom of Great Britain actually is – or had to explain it to someone and got stuck half way through, then look no further. This short animated infographic by CGP Grey gives you all the information that you were too afraid (or disinterested) to ask.

Some interesting points are brought to the fore – like the fact that the UK is still, essentially, a theocracy – but more importantly for visitors to these fair isles it unpicks the knots between the English, Scots, Welsh and Irish (both Northern and Republic of, as it were) and has some funny points to make on the way.

I laughed at the part when Mr Grey described the different attitudes between the nationalities and quite rightly pointed out that although we are all British passport holders, most of us don’t really like to be called that.

What this infographic really does well, however, is to establish the difference between The Crown, the British Isles, the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth Realm, the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories. It’s all done at a breakneck speed, however, so you may have to watch it more than once to take it all in.

We are not sure of Mr Grey's nationality but we think he may be Canadian.  There must be some irony there...
